Ecological engineering is an emerging study of integrating ecology and engineering, concerned with the design, monitoring, and construction of ecosystems. According to Mitsch (1996) “the design of sustainable ecosystems intends to integrate human society with its natural environment for the benefit of both”.
Ecoogical engineering is very close to Permaculture which is a system of agricultural and social design principles centered around simulating or directly utilizing the patterns and features observed in natural ecosystems. However EE is based more on academic curriculum.
At present, ecological engineering got known firsthand for developing waste water treatment systems such as constructed wetland which emulate the processes in natural marsh ecosystems in order to clear the waste water to acceptable levels.
However ecological engineering has big potential as a general approach for designing any human ecosystem.
